"Mrs. Murphy from
Sandhurst has brought me several birds which had various injuries. However, this morning
when she rang my doorbell, she had a special "patient," a tiny Ruby-throated
Hummingbird. While she was in Hilton Head visiting her son who is a lawyer there, the
hummingbird injured itself when it flew into the glass window of her son's office. It was wrapped in a man's hankerchief when she handed the
little bird to me. Upon examination, I found that its wing was broken. What a challenge it
was to my imagination to find a way to mend the wing of such a small creature. Whatever I
did worked, because the bird could fly in five days, and was released into the flower
garden in two weeks where I was happy to see it fly free. It made a wonderful model for my
painting.
