 "The model for this painting came to my Rehab Sanctuary from Kiawah. The Grounds Keeper there found the beautiful Egret with one foot caught in a drain grate. The foot was injured. I took the heron to the Vet to plan our method of treatment. The treatment was not without peril. The sharp beak could reach for one's eyes like a flash. Every afternoon I wrapped the heron in a heavy army blanket, exposing only the injured foot, so that I could clean and medicate the foot and bandage the injury.

Several weeks passed. It grew stronger on a diet of fish. The foot got well and it was time to return the beautiful waterbird to the wild. We had a "Fly Away" party with the children who lived nearby. We were happy to see the egret fly away over the inland waterway that borders our grounds.

"Five Great Blue Herons have been found disabled, and brought to my Studio sanctuary in the last two years. Three of the Herons responded to my care and were able to return to the wild. The last one that was a patient in my licensed re-hab center, here on James Island, near my studio,was so beautiful that I portrayed it in my painting".
