"Early in the spring
a policeman came to the door of my studio sanctuary with his hat turned upside down
holding a nest of Carolina Wrens. Officer Gobel said the nest was found in a yellow bucket
under his fishing boat seat. He had heard birds chirping while he was fishing on the
Edisto river but thought the bird's sounds were coming from the overhanging tree branches
near the boat. When he needed the bucket, he found the nest of the little wrens. Only two
out of the five wrens were still alive when they arrived at the sanctuary where they were
raised by hand and used for models in this painting".
