"The beautiful red
cardinal was orphaned the day it was hatched because a cat killed it's mother. I raised
the tiny little, naked bird and painted it's portrait 13 times in various poses and
different branches. That was June 7, 1983. The male bird lived 18 years and 5 months! The
female portrayed in the painting lived 14 years. Many school children come to my bird sanctuary to see the different birds in the
large walk-in aviary over the years. Certain birds are kept with a permit from the Dept.
of the Interior for educational purposes in my sanctuary. These birds are not able to be
released, however, most of the birds do recover from injuries and are happily released to
the wild".
